ACT Practice Questions: Math — What to Expect and How to Prepare

ACT Math: Every Topic, Practice Questions, and a One-Week Study Plan

The ACT Math section has 60 questions in 60 minutes — one minute per question on average. Unlike the SAT, there are no adaptive modules and no separate calculator/no-calculator split. A graphing calculator is allowed throughout.

What Math Topics Are Tested?

1. Pre-Algebra & Elementary Algebra (~40%): Operations, ratios, percentages, linear equations, inequalities, systems of equations.

2. Intermediate Algebra (~15%): Quadratics, functions, exponentials, inequalities with absolute value.

3. Coordinate Geometry (~15%): Slope, distance, midpoint, lines, parabolas, and circles in the xy-plane.

4. Plane Geometry (~23%): Angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, area, perimeter, volume.

5. Trigonometry (~7%): Right triangle trig (SOH-CAH-TOA), basic trig identities, radians.

Geometry carries significantly more weight on the ACT than the SAT — about 30–40% of the section combined. Don't neglect it.

Question Format

Multiple choice (100%): Five answer choices, one correct. Every question on the ACT Math section is multiple choice — there are no student-produced response questions.

Calculators are allowed throughout, but many questions are faster without one. Don't become calculator-dependent.

Sample Practice Questions by Type

Linear Equations

If 4x – 7 = 2x + 11, x = 9. ACT variant: "What is 3x – 2?" Answer: 25. Always check whether the question asks for x or an expression.

Systems of Equations

3x + 2y = 16 and x – y = 1. From the second: x = y + 1. Substitute: 5y + 3 = 16, y = 2.6.

Percentages

$240 reduced by 15%, then increased by 10%: $240 × 0.85 = $204. $204 × 1.10 = $224.40. Note: 15% – 10% ≠ 5% off the original.

Quadratics

x² – 4x – 12 = 0. Factor: (x – 6)(x + 2) = 0. Solutions: x = 6 or x = –2.

Geometry

A circle with radius 5 has area 25π. If a sector covers 72°, its area is (72/360) × 25π = 5π. The ACT tests sector area, arc length, and inscribed angles regularly.

Trigonometry

In a right triangle with opposite = 3 and hypotenuse = 5: sin θ = 3/5, cos θ = 4/5, tan θ = 3/4. The ACT tests SOH-CAH-TOA in straightforward setups — know it cold.

Common Mistakes That Cost Students Points

  • Solving for x when the question asks for 2x + 3

  • Treating sequential percentage changes as additive

  • Forgetting to check both solutions for quadratics

  • Misreading which dataset a graph question refers to

  • Skipping geometry formulas (area, volume, circle relationships) — unlike the SAT, the ACT does not provide a formula sheet

How to Practice ACT Math Effectively

  1. Take a diagnostic to identify weak areas

  2. Practice by topic until solid

  3. Move to timed, mixed practice sets

  4. Take full-length timed sections every 2 weeks

  5. Review every wrong answer with written explanations

Timing Strategy

60 minutes for 60 questions — 60 seconds per question. The ACT is faster-paced than the SAT. If a question will take more than 90 seconds, skip and return. Circle it on your answer sheet and come back in the final few minutes. Never leave a question blank — there's no penalty for wrong answers.
